Announcing Rubato: A New Choir for 10–17yo Beginners

Do you know (or are you) a young person who has always wanted to sing but hasn’t had the chance? Melbourne Youth Chorale is thrilled to announce the launch of Rubato, a new youth choir for beginners aged 10–17. Starting in Term 1, 2025, Rubato is all about inclusion, fun, and professional music education—and there are no auditions required!

Why join Rubato?

Rubato is designed to provide a welcoming space for young people to explore the joy of singing, regardless of their prior experience. Whether your young person sings in the shower, hums to their favourite tunes, or has never sung before, this is the perfect opportunity for them to find their voice. Here’s why Rubato stands out:

Congratulations to Claire Burger, for her appointment as Melbourne Youth Chorale's 2024 Junior Conductor!

Program proudly supported by The City of Casey

It was a difficult decision to choose from several excellent applicants. Congratulations Claire!

Melbourne Youth Chorale (MYC) has initiated a Junior Conducting Program to cultivate the next generation of musical leaders. This program aims to provide young musicians with invaluable skills in conducting, fostering their passion for music and developing their leadership abilities, while being provided mentorship, guidance, and support. By offering this opportunity, MYC seeks to nurture a deep appreciation for choral music among young individuals while empowering them to take on active roles within the MYC community. MYC is growing and we envisage numerous opportunities for new choirs to be formed in the future, providing our Junior Conductors with various platforms for leadership and direction.

The Junior Conducting Program endeavours to instil leadership qualities in young musicians, teaching them to inspire and guide their peers through the medium of music. By taking on the role of a conductor, participants learn important skills such as communication, teamwork, and decision-making, which are invaluable in various aspects of life beyond the realm of music

At MYC we really value diversity. Last week we held a celebration of MYC's cultural diversity for Harmony

Day, sharing an international meal together. As part of the Cultural Awareness Project funded by Creative Australia, our junior choristers had a special workshop with Manori Wijeratna, teacher of Eastern Music, and presented the song to parents immediately before MYC's AGM.

MYC's focus on diversity drew attention from the panelists for the Casey Community Awards and MYC was a finalist in the Equity and Inclusion category.

Caitlyn Bosch & Kerry Alexander attended the awards ceremony and celebrated the great work being done by so many in the community. We met some fabulous people and look forward to continuing those associations into the future.
